First Sensory Story Festival Coming to Edinburgh!

Calling all storytellers – come and develop your sensory storytelling skills!

A basket of colorful scarves.

Sensory stories are stories told with the help of props, sounds, smells, actions and other stimuli. Using sensory stories can be a wonderful way of creating story sessions that are fun for children and adults with additional needs, people living with dementia, people with English as an additional language, young children and babies. They are also a whole lot of fun for the storyteller!

The Accessible Book and Story Festival is a unique opportunity to develop your sensory story skills. Leading experts in sensory storytelling are coming together from across the UK and beyond for two days of inspiring workshops and sharing practice events on the 13th and 14th September at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh. Buy your tickets here.

Pioneering sensory theatre company Oily Cart will be leading a workshop at the festival

Sensory storytelling is one of the most important tools used by schools, care settings and cultural organisations to make stories, books, exhibitions and events accessible for people with additional needs. The first Accessible Book and Story Festival will be a celebration of sensory storytelling. Learn the theories behind sensory storytelling, how to make your stories more inclusive for people with a wide variety of additional needs, what kind of props to use and why and how to set up projects in schools and care settings.

The festival is being produced by My Kind of Book with funding from Creative Scotland and others. We are very grateful for the support from the Scottish Storytelling Forum and the Scottish Storytelling Centre. If you have any questions at all please contact Ailie: [email protected]
