Putting traditional Dance on the Music Map of Scotland

Putting traditional Dance on the Music Map of Scotland

For over 20 years, The Traditional Music & Song Association of Scotland (TMSA) has been working to inform people about the opportunities to take part in traditional music – and often dance – by collating details of events, festivals and activity from around Scotland into a hard copy publication – the TMSA Events Calendar – as well listing the details up online at www.tmsa.org.uk.

In recent years, the work to keep people informed has expanded to social media and now an interactive map of Scottish musical traditions has been developed – supported by VisitScotland’s Growth Fund.

The idea behind the map is to give people – especially visitors to Scotland – a flavour of the different geographical music traditions, types of music, instruments and themes that run through the cultural heritage of the country.

It is very much a work in progress and after its initial incarnation, it is expected there will be suggestions of more content, links to materials and further information sources, so the map will continue to evolve in depth and coverage.

You can view the entry on Scottish Dance at https://tmsa.scot/dance and the TMSA is interested in any relevant suggestions of content you think should be featured in this (or any other section) of the map. This includes notable artists and tradition bearers and audio/visual examples. You can feed in your ideas via the feedback link at the bottom of each page on the Music Map website or email: [email protected]
